For example, if you want to become a teacher in New Zealand, you must register with the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand. As part of the application process, you will have to submit evidence of English proficiency and the IELTS Academic test or IELTS One Skill Retake test results are eligible for registration.

Consistent and clear requirements

Some degrees and courses have specific English language requirements. Even for all these courses, IELTS the only test that is always accepted. These include:

University of Waikato

  • Bachelor of Nursing (BNurs) and Master of Nursing Practice (MNursPrac)

  • IELTS Academic overall score of 7.0 (with no less than 7.0 in any band) are required.

  • All other tests will be considered on a case-to-case basis.

University of Otago

  • Law: Master of Law (LLM) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

  • Social work: Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and Master of Social and Community Work (Applied)

  • For these select courses, only IELTS and TOEFL scores are listed as recognised English language tests.

Auckland University of Technology

  • According to the AUT website:
    “Due to professional registration requirements, IELTS is the required English test for most health science degrees. It’s also the preferred English test for all other AUT qualifications.”

  • Health science programmes require an IELTS test result to demonstrate English language proficiency.

University of Auckland

  • According to the UoA website:
    “Every programme page on our website specifies an IELTS (Academic) score as the minimum English-language requirement for that programme.”

  • The university website also lists Approved English proficiency tests equivalent to IELTS (Academic); however, some programmes only accept an IELTS test due to professional registration requirements.

Massey University

  • Bachelor of Nursing

  • IELTS (Academic) is the only English test accepted.

  • You must have achieved at least 6.5 across all bands with no band less than 6.5 within the preceding two years.
