What is the difference between IELTS Progress Check and the real IELTS test?

IELTS Progress Check is an official online preparation tool which enables you to try authentic test content in an online environment and enables you to get official feedback from IELTS experts. However, given that this is delivered online (whereas the real test is delivered in a face-to-face environment) there are inevitably some differences.

  • IELTS Progress Check practice tests are not timed. We recommend you time yourself to get the most realistic result, however we do not enforce a timer because we want you to be in control of your practise. This way, if you are interrupted during your practise, you can return and resume the test when it is convenient for you.

  • Before the Listening and Speaking section you will need to check that your computer or iPad has speakers with sound switched on and that your microphone settings are working. You will be prompted to test your microphone at the beginning of the Speaking section and to record a sample to check everything is working correctly.

  • During the Speaking section, we show a timer counting down how much time you have to answer each question. Don’t worry if you talk for slightly longer than the recording allows. We will have enough of a sample in order to assess your answers. In the real test, the examiner may enable you to speak for slightly longer if you have a lot to say but will usually move you along to the next question.

  • If you do not hear a question in the Speaking section, it will not be repeated. In the real test, you are able to ask the examiner to repeat a question. Don’t worry if this happens in the practice test, as you can start the complete Speaking test again.

  • If you need to take notes during your practice test, you will need to make those separately (e.g. using pen and paper) as there is not a ‘notes’ tool within IELTS Progress Check. You will get your IELTS Progress Check results within five days of completing a whole test. In the real test, results are made available after 13 days.

  • Your IELTS Progress Check results cannot be used to support applications for study, professional registration or immigration purposes.

  • Finally, due to the fact that these are practice tests which you take in your own time, within conditions we cannot control, the results you get are indicative only. In addition, they are a reflection of the standard of English you demonstrate in that particular practice test only. In other words, just because you achieved a band score ‘6’ in your IELTS Progress Check practice test does not guarantee that you will receive the same score in your real test. That will depend on your own performance on the day of your real IELTS test.

Why isn't the IELTS Progress Check timed like the real IELTS test?

You can choose to purchase an untimed or timed test.

Untimed

Choose an untimed test to sit an IELTS practice test without a timer. You can complete each section of the test at your own pace.

Timed

Choose a timed test to sit an IELTS practice test under timed conditions. There is a time limit to complete each section of the practice test, like the actual IELTS test.

Can I review my answers during the test?

Yes. The pace at which you sit the test is up to you and you can review the answers. However, please remember that during the real test you will have time to review your answers within each section of the test but once you have moved onto the next component you won’t be able to return to the previous one. Therefore, for the most authentic test experience (and to get a realistic score) from your IELTS Progress Check, we recommend sticking to the same conditions as you would have to in the test, wherever possible.

What happens if I have to stop - or lose access - part of the way through the test?

Don’t worry. Simply go back to IELTS Progress Check via your browser history, bookmarks or the link in your registration email. The answers to the questions you have completed will be saved. However, due to technical restrictions, the Listening and Speaking recording will start again from the beginning. Although if you have already completed and submitted your recordings they will have been saved.
